The Mameluks seized Baghdad in 1258 and the Seljuk sultans took over the area of Baghdad’s Abbasid palaces and restored the Abbasids to power. In 1263, the Mameluks were expelled from Baghdad and the Seljuks became the official rulers of the Abbasid Caliphate.

In 1334, the Mongols stormed Baghdad and looted and destroyed the Abbasid capital. In 1350, the Ottoman Turks became the first Muslim rulers of Baghdad. In 1401, the Ottoman Turks were expelled from Baghdad by Tamerlane, and the city was briefly occupied by the Nasrid dynasty of Granada until 1450. In 1451, Baghdad was occupied by the Safavid dynasty of Iran.

In 1535, the Ottoman Turks returned to Baghdad, and later they gained a series of victories in the Battle of Diyarbakir.
