## Keeping It Up-to-Date

As a user of Photoshop, I write articles to help other users and myself. The problem is, many Adobe products — including Photoshop — are updated very frequently. Hundreds of new features are added every year. When a product is updated, the entire user base must be made aware of this, and the new versions must be downloaded.

As an alternative to Photoshop, Photoshop Elements simplifies the use of editing tools. You can click and drag elements such as color, size, position and type, as well as create new elements. Editing tools such as the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush are available.

Before You Start

Before starting, make sure you have Photoshop Elements installed and on your PC. Install it via a USB drive, CD or other file transfer method. Here is Adobe’s link to the download.

Step 1

Let’s start with some basic images. Here, I edited a simple, natural scene using only the basic tools. I started with the image in a new document, created a new layer with the colors on the right side of the image. I will use the duplicate command and the Move tool to reduce the original image.

Open the image in the Photoshop Elements 11 program.

Select Edit > Duplicate.

Copy the image.

Select Edit > Paste.

Press Shift or Ctrl+J (Alt+J on a Mac) to paste into a new layer and turn the layer display off. The layer should now display with the top color (blue) on the left side.

Delete the layer.

Step 2

The next step is to remove the blue color. Select Edit > Fill.

Select the Brush tool and then set the brush to Soft Round, 30 px.

Make sure the Multiply blend mode is selected and check the color Sameness and Tint at the bottom of the window.

Make sure the Transparency checkbox is checked.

Click to the right of the brush on the canvas. Select the color white and press Enter to stroke the brush. You will now have a nice selection of color in the shape of the round brush. Use the Selection tool to select the area of the circle and press Delete.

Step 3

Press Ctrl+T (Cmd+T on a Mac) to create a new layer.

Move the image to the right side of the screen and press Ctrl+T again to duplicate the layer.

Make sure the Selection tool is selected.

How to increase the surface size of an iPad UIView created using Auto Layout

I have an iPad app that has a ViewController with a UIView on the first screen that is designed using Autolayout in Xcode. The View Controller is just a container for the UIView.
The problem is that the UIView has a maximum size of only 320 x 464 even though the UIView has autolayout constraints to maintain its original size. It is similar to the auto layout issue with iPhone screens.
I have looked at adding the UIView as a subview of another view that has a larger size but the width and height constraints don’t seem to apply when I set the size of the larger view (it’s always at 0 height and width).
I want to increase the size of the UIView so that I can display a map on the entire screen and allow more real estate for scrolling.
