* **Powerful tools for editing your images**. Choose your image file, select tools, drag a tool to the canvas, and use the tool’s keyboard shortcuts.
In addition to its powerful, layer-based features, Photoshop has a range of selection tools that make it easy to isolate objects and create special effects. These selection tools are based on _mask_ layer technology, which allows you to add and change color and even physical properties such as the thickness of a stroke or the hardness of a fill.
* **Create professional-quality digital images**. Photoshop has most of the tools you need to create images you can use in print or the Web, including layers, paths, smart objects, and other tools that help you animate the layers in your image or incorporate new image layers.
* **Adjust color, contrast, and saturation**. You can easily adjust the overall color of a photo or fix dark or blown-out highlights. Use the dialog boxes to fix color problems.
* **Create special effects**. Photoshop lets you create special effects such as small textures, edge-detection styles, and lens effects.
* **Work with layers**. Each image is built up from one or more layers. Move, copy, hide, and hide or reveal (in the Layers panel) individual layers.
* **Manage and organize your image files**. Photoshop can store multiple versions of your images in an organized file structure, including multiple layers and the ability to import and export multiple images.
Photoshop is an amazing suite of tools for creating images and editing your images. On the following pages, you’ll learn the tools and techniques in this chapter, and then learn more about Photoshop’s many more features in Chapter 8.
UP TO SPEED: Some Photoshop Basic Information
You already know that Photoshop is one of the most commonly used programs in the world.
For most people, the Photoshop Live View is the core reason to use Photoshop. You can see what your image will look like in real time, before you spend hours working on an image. You can also see which steps are needed to achieve your goal. If you try something in Photoshop and it doesn’t work, you can use the Undo command to reverse that step and get the image back to where it was.
By default, you’ll see a grid in Photoshop. If you click View, you can adjust the size of the grid.
Photoshop Elements is a powerful non-destructive editor with the ability to store your work in its own format, which enables you to view it in future without losing any of the original or the editing. It has all the features of the professional version, but it is much easier to use, with fewer features.
Photoshop Elements was originally designed for the following purposes:
Photographers and designers can create and edit photos and graphics.
Element 4 for iOS and Android smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices enables you to edit photos and create graphics on the go.
Photoshop Elements for web is an indispensable tool for web designers and developers.
All of these are very powerful tools for graphic design and editing, and Adobe even provides a coupon code to download the software for free. However, the price of Adobe Photoshop Elements is reasonable, and its standard and premium versions are also available to use.
Use the default set of actions to add new objects and perform actions on them, e.g. add text, add a path, add a new layer, add a filter, add a stroke, etc.
Double-click on an object to modify its properties, or use the menu to select properties that you want to modify.
By default, the ribbon is in the foreground. You can use the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut to make it switch position between the toolbox and the image.
The menu can be used to access all the tools available in the editor. Once you have chosen an object or the color, you can use the mouse, keyboard, the action palette, etc.
There are 10 different editing modes.
Whenever you want to access a tool, select it from the toolbox or use the action palette.
You can change the line width and line type from the options bar or the image window.
The tools in the editor can be accessed from the menu by choosing the Edit → Effect → Explore, or from the toolbox by clicking on it.
The tools are divided into nine categories:
