After you work on a design, you can use an image-editing program called Bridge to add and organize the same images from your camera into your workspace. This program enables you to select and add all of your images to your computer based on your needs. In this way, Bridge is the default organizer of an image.

Exploring the interface

Photoshop’s interface is similar to a drawing program. You use tools to create layers, and all your layers become components of the image.

The Layers panel (as shown in Figure 12-2) groups your layers into stacks. You can have as many layers as you want. You can have a stack for the entire image, each layer having a different tone or intensity of color, a stack for different elements in your image, or a stack for each of the steps in the image editing process. To add a new layer to an image, simply click the New Layer icon in the Layers panel.

The prevalence of schizophrenia is not constant across the lifespan. In early life, the risk of experiencing schizophrenia typically rises over the first 10 years and decreases from adolescence to adulthood. A second peak in risk for schizophrenia is observed at around age 25 (coinciding with the years of highest earnings in the United States) followed by an expected decline thereafter. The rationale for this age-by-age pattern of schizophrenia risk is unknown, but various lines of research suggest that it may reflect a constitutional vulnerability that is exacerbated by environmental events at these specific ages. This may be particularly true for adolescents, whose brains are undergoing considerable neurodevelopmental changes. This competing continuation (A1) proposes a new approach toward understanding the etiology of schizophrenia, which seeks to identify brain-based characteristics that co-vary with schizophrenia risk across the lifespan, in part by adopting a systems perspective that studies functional changes at the level of interacting brain systems. The central hypothesis is that brain dynamics in a broad range of functional domains, including the intrinsic brain activity underlying resting state, the strength of cognitive control over these dynamics, and the extent to which those functions are disrupted by the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, predict the risk of developing and/or maintaining the illness across the lifespan in men and women. By performing state-of-the-art analyses on multimodal, simultaneous, and longitudinal data acquired in more than 500 subjects, this study will test whether stress- and social-cognitive impairments and variations in the neural dynamics underlying those functions are risk factors for schizophrenia.
