The original version of Photoshop was released in 1991 by Adobe for Macintosh computers. Adobe subsequently released versions for Windows and then for OS X (or Mac OS X). Photoshop can also be used on iOS.
Getting to know Photoshop’s workspace
Although Photoshop is one of the few image editing programs that’s available on all platforms (PCs, Macs, iOS, and Android), its workspace can look quite different depending on which platform it’s running. This seems to be more of an issue for novice users who are starting out on a new platform. The following figures highlight some of the major differences between Windows and OS X image editors, but the same principle applies to mobile apps, too.
When running Photoshop on your Windows PC or Mac, you see a large workspace that contains a visual composition of layers with the selected image in the center. This layer system enables you to manipulate a single image and create and alter multiple overlays to manipulate and track the resulting changes in the layer.
When working in Photoshop for Mac, the workspace looks very much like the original Macintosh version that shipped with Photoshop in 1991. This is very different from the Windows desktop workspace, which, as I explain in the following sections, includes a single image window that looks and feels much different than the arrangement in the Mac workspace.
When running Photoshop on your iOS device, you see a small workspace that contains a basic visual user interface based on the standard iOS interface. You can drag photos into an image editing app and use basic tools to manipulate them. If you try to use some of Photoshop’s more advanced editing tools or if you use third-party apps to access Photoshop functionality, you see a low-resolution version of the image editing workspace you see on Windows or OS X.
You can’t replicate the Mac look in an iOS workspace. For example, an iOS device won’t display layers — such as the shadow effect or color channels — that you add as overlays. On an iOS device, all the layers are flattened into a single image. You can’t change the opacity of an individual layer.
Although you can’t see layers in an iOS workspace, you can use tools to create vector paths that can be used to morph and edit individual image areas. You can also use tools to remove objects such as a crop square.
Customizing Photoshop to fit the platform
Customizing Photoshop for a specific platform requires you to perform a couple of steps:
1. Perform some initial prep work.
The latest version of Photoshop is now Photoshop CC. It is completely different than Photoshop Elements (which it replaced). Photoshop CC has many new powerful features.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 12.2.2 adds even more great new features, improved performance, and also removes a problem that users had with dragging menu items in Windows.
Below is a list of great new features that Photoshop Elements 12.2.2 adds to the program. Some of these are very helpful, whereas others require some training to use.
1. The Optical Viewer
The Optical Viewer is a window that lets you view the pixel values of an image. It is very helpful for creating resolutions for output files. For example, if you are going to make a print, then the image needs to be made as large as your printer can produce it.
With the Optical Viewer, you can find the largest pixel size that will fit the image on your printer and then change the file’s resolution to match it.
2. Use the Drawing Bar
The Drawing Bar lets you create your own graphic artwork.
With the Drawing Bar, you can make your own awesome clip art. If you do this often, you might want to have the Drawing Bar stored on your hard drive. That way, you won’t have to manually create your own artwork.
3. View Multiple Images Using the Viewer
It is often helpful to be able to view multiple images at the same time. Some images have to be view next to each other for effective comparisons. You can do this by clicking on the + symbol that appears on the top right corner of the active image.
In the new version of Photoshop Elements, there is now a new way to view a group of images at the same time. You no longer have to click on the + symbol, but you can hold the Command/Control Key and click on the images you want to be viewed. You can also keep your original mouse click left over.
4. Save Multiple Print Previews
You can now save multiple print previews of the same image. This is useful if you want to see how many prints you can make before they start to look like each other.
