Match strings that could start with certain characters

I would like to match some strings that could start with specific characters (in this case a “~”, a “!” or a “.”).
E.g.:
“Any String”
“!~!~!~”
“Anything”
“!~!~!~!!!~!!!”

For the last case, it should return a list of all matches, e.g.:
[“Any String”, “Any String”, “!”]

The problem is that I do not find a solution. I try with regexp_match() and find the position of “~”. Next the problem is to select the string from the list of matches where the start position is in a specific range.
I’d appreciate any tip.

First of all, regular expressions are not the best tool for this task. There are other options like “LIKE” and, if it’s not possible to change your schema, PLSQL queries.
If you must use regular expressions, you should use a back reference to extract the whole text:
pat = ‘(~|!|.)(.*)\1’
=> #

To extract the first and the last part you can use
pat = ‘(~|!|.)(.*)(~|!|.)’
=> #

You can now use the third captures to find the desired range:
pat = ‘(~|!|.)(.*)(~|!|.)’
=> #
