In the interest of full disclosure, this book was written using Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5. Adobe released Lightroom 5 for Mac at the same time as CS6.
## Image Editing and Photoshop CS6
As we work with images in this book, we’ll need to edit them many times. We’ll use the following processes to modify images:
* **Importing a new image into Photoshop**. You need to have a copy of the original image open in order to create a new image based on it.
Figure 1-3. This example shows how to use the Lens Correction filter.
* **Creating a new layer**. You need a new layer for any effect or adjustment that you do.
You can create a new layer directly in Photoshop, but it is easiest to create a new layer on a new file by creating a new file and merging the new layer into it.
You can merge the new layer onto an existing file (after creating it) as well as merge the new layer into a document template. To merge a layer into a document template, simply drag the new layer into the Document Outline window to bring up the Merge dialog box (Ctrl+M, or choose Edit→”Merge Layers”). From the Merge Settings screen, select “Layer 1” (where 1 is the layer you want to merge).
* **Adding a color filter**. Color filters enable Photoshop to manipulate the colors in an image. Color filters are a big part of the expressive power of Photoshop. One of the most powerful Color Filter operations is the Lens Correction filter. For more on color filters and Lens Correction, see Color Filters.
You can also use Adjustment Layers to alter the colors of a photo. Chapter 3 has more on Adjustment Layers.
* **Using the Healing Brush**. The Healing Brush enables the user to selectively color in or erase parts of an image.
The editor lets users edit, create and arrange pictures and incorporate special effects. Photoshop elements lets users fix or alter photos, add layers to create photo collages, correct perspective, crop images, and rotate an image. The application has many more features than its free and professional counterparts, Photoshop and Photoshop. Elements supports photo editing by experienced users as well as beginners. The editing tools are easy to use, which makes it very accessible even to beginners.
Furthermore, Elements let users crop images, change lighting and perspective and alter image brightness, contrast and size.
The application also lets users add text to an image, blend together layers, change colors and styles of text. This can be done with simple click-and-drag tools or with Photoshop-like tools.
Adobe Photoshop is also famous for its brush tools that let users paint and draw on the photo, add a texture, draw lines, draw shapes, apply a fill, change the brush size, brush pressure, stroke, color or opacity.
Photoshop elements gives all the features of the professional version in the free version. For example, Photoshop Elements 20 also has the Draw, Transform, Edit, Image, Adjust, Animation, Layers, Adjustments, Create, Enhance, Crop, Adjustments, Effects, Watercolor, 3D, Grid, Measure, View and Adobe Character Pro.
Adobe Photoshop elements is the most used desktop application for editing pictures and photo editing.

Some tools that are not listed here are also available in the panel and help you crop images and apply adjustments.
There are a variety of types of Brushes that are available in Photoshop. They are called “brushes.” You can use either a Brush or a Pencil to draw a shape or fill an area. There are also “selections” which can be used to draw and fill an area.
When you open a brush, you will see a preview of the shape or object that will be created. You can use the left, right, and up arrows to make changes to the

Once you’re done correcting an image, you can use the Paste in Place option to paste the image directly onto the desktop. You can also copy the image into another directory.
For those who want to learn how to use Photoshop to their advantage, one of the best ways to get a feel for its features and functions is by playing around with the tools. However, it’s not always easy to grasp how the tools work. That’s why we wrote Photoshop Essentials: A Hands-on Guide to the Adobe Photoshop program for beginners.
