Autodesk, Inc. developed AutoCAD as a CAD application for engineers, architects and other architects working in the construction industry.
The application was released initially as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) product for the Hewlett-Packard HP-1000 series of minicomputers with integrated graphics controllers, which were developed by Autodesk, Inc. (the creator of AutoCAD). HP used AutoCAD as a means of providing engineering and architecture-related graphics on its personal computer models.
As originally marketed by Autodesk, Inc., AutoCAD was a desktop app, initially available on Apple II, Atari 400/800, Commodore PET, and IBM PC compatible personal computers (PCs), and later on the Apple Macintosh. In May 1982, a version was made available for the IBM PC XT and IBM PC XT/AT personal computers. In 1983, the Hewlett-Packard HP-1000 series of minicomputers with integrated graphics controllers were made available. In 1983, Microsoft released Microsoft Basic, a BASIC-like programming language and environment, and Microsoft FORTRAN, an Object-Oriented Programming language and environment, to operate on the IBM PC XT.
With these releases of BASIC and FORTRAN, AutoCAD became the first CAD application to be commercially released for the IBM PC. AutoCAD ran on IBM PCs with 80-column (65,536 characters) or 256-column (16,777,216 characters) text screens, with 16-bit graphics display and an 8086 or 8088 Intel microprocessor. AutoCAD offered 128-color (color display mode) graphics and 256-color (true color) graphics. AutoCAD also offered 32-bit graphics display and 256-color graphics.
AutoCAD uses a LISP-based programming language, termed AutoLISP. It allows users to customize AutoCAD through the use of textual editor macros. Some of the advantages of using AutoLISP to create macros in AutoCAD include: AutoCAD’s history system allows for the reuse of macros and this reuse is centralized in the database. Thus, if a change is made to a macro it is automatically made in all macros that use the macro. In addition, by using macros, it is possible to have text properties, drawing scale factors and other advanced features built into the core of the software.
AutoLISP applications can also be developed in Visual LISP, a LISP-based programming language that can use Microsoft Visual Studio. In both AutoLISP and Visual LISP the core of the program is made of textual macro commands. Users can program in AutoLISP by following a series of procedure commands written in AutoLISP, which are stored in a file called “map” which represents a set of instructions to be executed when a particular action occurs. These “map” files, allow users to customize AutoCAD to their own requirements. Users can also write their own textual macros directly into AutoCAD.
VBA, an automation interface for Microsoft Office, is available on all Microsoft Office installations. VBA macros are also available for AutoCAD and can be used for macros within AutoCAD. AutoCAD’s Basic Graphics Dialog Box, BGL is a simple graphic form which accepts a standard Macros. ObjectARX is an add-on tool that adds functionality such as custom properties, grid, feature or toolbars.
AutoLISP is a LISP programming language for AutoCAD. AutoLISP is one of the most important AutoCAD products and a core product feature. AutoLISP has been successfully used to produce plugins to enhance the core functions of AutoCAD for over a decade and has been used for this purpose on over 3000 different AutoCAD releases and on over 1 million licenses of AutoCAD.
All major features are built using AutoLISP. For example, CAD application drivers and visualisation tools are available. New AutoLISP functions can be written to add functionality to the core product. Some AutoLISP languages are developed only for AutoCAD only or only for AutoC
