leonardo also recognized that anatomy was an art. he was well aware that his anatomical drawings were not meant to be diagnostic. his primary goal was to use anatomy and human movement to create great art. consequently, he placed much emphasis on how a sculpture of the human figure should appear, even when it was based on a poorly executed dissection. for example, he would have frowned on a wrong posture in an extant human. however, after describing these problems he emphasized that it is the anatomical illustration itself that should be the most compelling aspect of the work.

leonardo’s anatomical drawings and human movement studies were far ahead of their time in many ways. his work was not published until after his death, and his most important published writings appeared many years after his death. hence, most sculptors today would find them difficult if not impossible to understand. the pages of each manuscript are covered with minute pencil notes in leonardo’s remarkably legible writing. he also drew many diagrams to show how the human body is actually made up of many small parts.

unfortunately, all of leonardo’s notes and sketches are in italian. consequently, we are only able to speculate on what the latin translation of a single word meant. for example, we can be sure that when he wrote inimicus he meant it to mean ‘foe’ and that there was something he meant by canius, but even he only provides a single word translated ‘dog’. while leonardo certainly considered the language barrier a major problem, it is difficult today to appreciate his difficulties. the italian text provides a wealth of information but understanding this might be as difficult as understanding his original drawings and sketches. fortunately, several excellent english translations have been made. he would have approved of one of the best of these, as it contains several of his major writings. for leonardo, the human body was not an abstraction but a living organism. it is a beautifully complex organ whose principles were continuously evolving throughout the ages. to better appreciate the inner workings of the human body we must understand the basic principles of its structure and function.
