Stéphane Denève started working with Photoshop when the program was at version 4.0. To him, “Photoshop is the only image editing software that can give life to any digital image.” He has a specialty in visual effects and has worked on Hollywood films such as Mission Impossible IV and Dark Knight Rises.
Denève shared his views about Photoshop, the tools and features he uses, and the image manipulation techniques he is familiar with.
How did you get interested in using Photoshop?
I learned the software from books and the Internet. I started on version 3.0, about 10 years ago. I had some free time for some projects, so I started by modifying some photos of myself that I had. I modified them to add reflection effect in the back of the face, and later, I modified photos of my friends and made some “I’m gonna kill you” T-shirts. I also created a personal website where I uploaded the modified images and wrote about the tricks I used.
Is the software free, or do you have to pay for it?
It is free up to a certain point. For example, when you make adjustments to the individual images, you can save it for editing later. After a certain number of layers, the software ceases to add new layers automatically. After that you have to click to add a new layer manually.
When I entered the professional market, I got my Photoshop training to learn to use it to its full potential. I also had to learn to use it for animation. I’m currently working on a video for the release of my first book, which can be pre-ordered at this link.
I tried many effects and effects plugins, such as PinLight, Magnetic, and SkewPlus. The effects and plugins were so easy to use and effective that they have now replaced most of my Photoshop effects. You may find those effects and effects plugins in my book Advanced Layer Editing with Photoshop CS5.
I also recommend you to check out Photoshop CS6 Extended tutorials, because I have a lot of tricks for you. You can find them by going to Photoshop CS6 Extended at the Adobe website.
I created the book Advanced Layer Editing with Photoshop CS5 in 2009, which was a kind of manual for beginners. I had the opportunity of teaching about 100 people how to use Photoshop in two schools in Paris. The program and the book are now translated into English and are available for sale at the

In the face of a projected shortfall of 18,000 faculty and staff by 2025, the University of Georgia established the center, which will serve as the central authority for planning and coordinating the recruitment and retention of staff.
The center, funded by the UGA Board of Regents and the State of Georgia at a cost of $7 million over three years, will bring together resources and data to help policymakers understand the dynamics of a changing economy.
“This is the largest single research unit I’ve seen created by a university in Georgia or the South,” said outgoing chairman of the UGA Board of Regents Eugene Gadsby. “We need to be doing a much better job of measuring the impact of our workforce development.”
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said he believes such a center will be the key to narrowing the gap between what he has called the “college for all” and the “college for some.”
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan speaks at an event to recognize the 20th anniversary of the U.S. Department of Education’s National College Access Campaign at the U.S. Department of Education Building in Washington D.C. Friday, April 27, 2012.
“I have a lot of respect for (the center’s director) Dr. (Gloria) Urrea but at some point you have to go into the real data and look at the real data,” Duncan said. “That’s really what this is about.”
James Lantz, dean of the School of Education, said the center will provide a common research and policy forum to foster collaboration among educators, researchers and policymakers.
“It should be used as a catalyst to stimulate and foster research and conversations,” Lantz said. “It should be a complement to the work we’re doing in classrooms and schools around the state.”
The board of regents gave its approval last week to the $7 million allocation.
The center will work with faculty, staff and students, Lantz said.
“The UGA has a special role to fill with its proximity to Atlanta and the Research Infusion (Center) at Georgia Tech. These two institutions are recognized nationally for their research-infusion work,” he said. “The UGA has an opportunity to be the hub for the region and to be a resource

The role of the microcirculation in the pathogenesis and treatment of alcoholic cardiomyopathy.
The involvement of arteriolar and capillary abnormalities in alcoholic cardiomyopathy has been recognized for some time. More recently the particular characteristics of the microvasculature have begun to be identified, particularly the interaction with sympathetic innervation. The sympathetic nervous system exerts an important influence on myocardial oxygen balance and can cause changes in capillary geometry as well as vasoconstriction, vasodilatation and venoconstriction. The consequent reduction in microvascular flow can result in myocardial ischaemia in the early stages of alcoholic heart disease. The microcirculation also has an important role in tissue oxygenation and washout of toxic metabolites, particularly those derived from alcohol metabolism. It is also affected by reflex neurohormonal activation and by catecholamines and prostaglandins. Factors that determine the response of the microcirculation to reflex activation include size, density, location and length of capillary beds as well as their capacity to respond to stimulus and their capability to act as oxygen diffusion sites. Factors that influence capillary function are hemodynamics, metabolism and local influences. The functional capacity of the microcirculation will be reduced in the early stages of alcoholic cardiomyopathy if the microcirculation is no longer able to meet its metabolic demands. The development of therapeutic methods to maintain or restore capillary perfusion would not only have a beneficial effect in terms of preservation of tissue metabolism, contractility and function, but would also prevent the late development of myocardial fibrosis and necrosis associated with coronary artery disease. The volume of blood that an individual serves is governed by arterial pressure and cardiac output and can be expressed in terms of the 2-2HED curve. In addition to the HED curve a number of non-HED related factors also influence microvascular perfusion and this may

Remember the Pong machine that was around in the 1960s? If so, you may remember the vision of a pixel with a ghostly white face that filled your TV screen while “Pong” played on the console. Our game is that… but with a much more modern twist: we’ve transformed the humble pixel into a fun and quirky
