Lightroom’s early days were rocky, and it seemed like it just didn’t have enough features for hobbyists and professionals. Thankfully, though, that’s no longer an issue. The software bug count is down by a good 90%, it’s on par with the likes of Apple’s Aperture, and it sports a ton of useful plug-ins, which align it with professionals like Photoshop and After Effects.

Lightroom may not be the fastest application you’ll ever use, but that’s not exactly a problem, and with the regular updates, there’s really nothing to worry about. What It Does: The Spot Healing Brush tool allows you to “erase” any “spot” of color by applying any of the colors that surround it. Using a slight blur gives you options on how much you’re willing to erase the surrounding color.

What It Does: The Content-Aware Scaling and Content-Aware Move tools allow you to blend and resample images, paste in a background image, and apply that image to an existing picture, create a new photograph, or resize an image. These tools use the information from the surrounding pixels, which makes them powerful, even if you don’t have Photoshop.

What It Does: The Gradient tool lets you draw a gradient from one color to another. You can use it to change the color of the background of a picture, blur or sharpen pictures, or fade one image into another.

The Dynamic Adjust panel offers the ability to adjust the image taking into account the size, exposure, contrast and highlights. You can adjust the color in a consistent manner for the entire image. The panel lets you know the importance of the adjustments to make. Finally, you are able to edit, change and apply these adjustments in the same way.

To deliver on this vision, as part of this transition, we have recently rebooted the 3D pipelines across the entire Adobe stack with native support for OpenGL-based rendering. As such, we’ve decided to continue supporting Photoshop’s legacy 3D features until Third Minds. They still hold relevance today, as 3D modeling tools are still important, and Photoshop’s legacy 3D features have been part of the foundation of 3D graphics and design for many decades, and still hold a place in our eyes. So, the 3Dexperience in Photoshop will be reborn with the support of Third Minds.

One of the biggest limitations of 3D in previous versions of Photoshop was the lack of Z-order editing. You could move 3D objects in or out of the render, and that was it. It was a lot like 2D objects, which is nice, but it’s limited and has been on our roadmap over the years to improve. So with the switch to GPU, we’ve made good strides there.

We’re in the process of planning for 3D scene export services in the CPU to address some of the challenges users might face with the 32-bit legacy format today, which would make file sizes smaller, allowing those who wish, to transfer larger files.

We’ve also been working on native 64-bit 3D for years, using OpenGL and OpenGL ES shader languages that we’ve had on our roadmap and been talking about. Because we have these shader languages, we have been able to support a subset of legacy 3D features in technologies such as Hair, on the GPU side.

This also means that ensuring quality 3D design in Photoshop is infinitely easier now with GPU rendering to OpenGL, because you don’t have to rely on third-party plugins to get a quality triangle geometry. On the CPU side, we’re still using the legacy format as a way to support legacy content, so even if you’ve rendered using a third-party plugin, you will now be able to have access to that content inside Photoshop. So you’ll be able to see and work with the 3D content that you’ve authored.

The selection tools in Photoshop are about as basic as they can get. The vast majority of people don’t need anything fancy, but if you or your clients do, you’ll need to work with a pro. The pick tool is the only tool that has improved in any way. Depending on which of two choices on the new picker toolbar is selected, the tool will snap to the closest spot and then follow a user-controlled path around the closest point.

It’s great that the new options to choose from the pick tool are more accurate. For example, you can now pick very accurately. How often are you in Photoshop Elements or Photoshop with elements and try to place items near each other, and then you work out where those items are on the screen only to realize you made a large error? Now you can just go ahead and pick the items accurately.

In addition to those changes, the Pick-A-Path workflow also now picks the closest point, even if it’s not the corner. As you drag around the object, you are not really paying attention to whether you are hitting the ends of the object or the center, but now Photoshop Elements will choose the most accurate way to select the objects.

If you are worried about using an app that will turn into a nightmare of a paint app, don’t. Photoshop Elements has always been a paint app. It still is. The underlying architecture for Photoshop Elements 12 is the same as for the previous versions. Elements is a great tool for people who just need to pick, select and move objects around. Is digital painting a skill that’s becoming less valuable than it once was? I’m sure in 10 years time, enough people will be using their iPad to make the iPhone 6 look like a really old phone.
