Choosing an application for beginners
Image editing does not have a strict set of standards; it is fairly subjective and will depend on the type of images you’re editing, the time you have to spend, and your current and desired skill level. Although Photoshop is well known and has a huge reputation for its skills, the learning curve is high, and people who purchased the program at the time it was first released were sometimes left with a program that didn’t work as they had imagined.
In recent years, Adobe’s software division has been releasing versions of the software that are more suited to beginning users. Photoshop Elements is probably the most popular and provides a basic layer-based editing and compositing toolkit. Other programs offer advanced features that the Elements version lacks.
PaintShop Pro is a classic, layer-based editing and compositing program. The program offers more layers, opacity masks, and other capabilities. It offers RAW-file support (PaintShop Pro 2008 and newer). The program also offers features for retouching, compositing, and creating Web graphics.
