Using Adobe Photoshop for photo editing
Photoshop, like many other editing programs in the market, offers support for multiple image formats, including TIFF, JPEG, and GIF. It also offers JPEG 2000, but only with a very limited number of options. The program also supports most of the popular RAW image formats, such as DNG and NEF (Nikon’s proprietary RAW format) and Canon’s CR2 format.
For the most part, Photoshop works fairly well with most image formats, and if you use the built-in crop and resolution tools, you can often get pretty darn good results.
However, if you need extra-wide or tall images to do print work, you need to first import a high-resolution TIFF file. You can then make the necessary adjustments to make the image wider or taller. I describe how to import these image types and how to use the crop and resolution tools in the following sections.
Choosing a file format
Photoshop includes most image formats as well as the tools to edit most images. However, if you’re hoping to print your image out at high resolution, you may find it best to first convert the images from one of the RAW formats to a TIFF or JPEG format.
You can also convert images from the RAW formats to other formats using the RAW Converter plug-in, which you can download from Adobe’s website at `www.adobe.com/creativecloud/photoshop/products/brands/adobe.html`.
File formats are described in Table 1-1.
Table 1-1 Common File Formats
Image Formats | Description
— | —
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) | Works pretty well for print, but not as high-quality as a RAW file and doesn’t support layers and transparency
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) | Supports transparency, layers, and multiple color spaces
RAW (Adobe’s proprietary raw image format) | Supports layers, transparency, and camera characteristics, and it can be printed at high quality. However, it’s not a true image format, but rather a record of all the changes that were made to the
