Photoshop is a very powerful program, but at the same time, it’s been around for so long that users’ expectations of it have become very high. So, if you can’t find the feature you want, you may have to completely redraw your approach when working in Photoshop. At the end of the day, you have to be creative, and Photoshop is a great tool that can be used in creative ways.
Understanding Photoshop Elements
Photoshop is the flagship program in the Photoshop family. The other members of the Photoshop family include the following (see Figure 15-2):
Photoshop Elements (version 12 and later): A new version of the older Photoshop Elements was released in 2013. Elements is an easy-to-use collection of editing and organizing tools that’s based on Photoshop CC, but contains many “add-ons” (options) to help with making images. You can use Photoshop Elements to create, organize, and manipulate your images as well. Elements doesn’t have the same level of depth and power as Photoshop, but it has quite a good level of usability.
Photoshop Express: This version of Photoshop is intended for mobile devices. It includes all the features found in standard versions of Photoshop. It also supports the “undo” feature, but, at this writing, you can’t undo most edits in Photoshop Express.
Photoshop Lightroom (version 2 and later): This is an alternative to the Lightroom 3.5 family of applications. It has many of the same features as Lightroom (discussed next in the chapter), but also includes advanced editing features such as red eye removal, crop, and retouching.
Photoshop (version 14 and later): This is a full version of Photoshop that has many more editing features than the original version of Photoshop. It also has higher-quality brushes.
**Figure 15-2:** Photoshop has many versions to fit a variety of needs.
Lightroom is a very popular alternative to Adobe’s Photoshop family. Lightroom 3.5 is the latest version of Lightroom, and it has many of the same features as Photoshop, Lightroom, and Photoshop Elements.
Lightroom 3.5 features a few minor changes, including the following:
New features: It’s easier than ever to use the features in Lightroom 3.5. One of the most significant changes is that the menu bar is now the center of focus. Instead of having to go through each menu to
Elements is available for free on Windows, Mac and Linux. It has the same user interface and also the same features as Photoshop.
If you have little experience, it’s very easy to use and you can make remarkable images even without a lot of experience.
Maybe not all of the features of Photoshop are available in Elements, but it does allow you to recreate images.
You can use the following filters to edit images: Crop, Watermark, Vignette, Filter, Blur, Heal, Red Eye Removal, Layers, Levels, Sharpen, Tone Curve, Greyscale, Picture-in-Picture, and Save.
In this guide, we will explain how to use Photoshop Elements as an editor.

You can access all of the effects and tools from the Filter panel.
Photoshop Elements Editor Brushes
Although, Photoshop Elements doesn’t offer the same number of brushes as Photoshop, the best quality of the editor is amazing. You can use
The true story of a would-be city councilman and a corrupt developer who conspired to steal a whole town — and also to cover it up
This is the big, true story you might have heard about happening in that town across the border in Arizona, and how a developer and a city official conspired to rob their own city.
Somehow, a city council member and a developer who wanted to build apartments in the town started negotiating over whether the city would award the city contractor who did construction for them the contract to build a new school.
(The city council was about to award the contract to an alternative company, which would have done the job for $10,000 less than the city contractor wanted, so the city council was hardening up against the developer’s company, which was heavily invested in the project, even though the developer’s company had to make up for that loss.)
In the midst of these negotiations, the developer started phoning around asking politicians for favors, and when he spoke to the city council member, they quickly agreed to enter into a corrupt and evil scheme, where the developer would pay off the city council member with free apartments in his new development, and then the city council member would say that the town’s developer had offered to bribe him to vote for that alternative construction company.
The public, upon hearing this story, would be expected to be horrified. They would be disgusted that a city official could sell his vote for $10,000 in housing units.
But, the city council member was not only making money from the housing unit developer but also on the side, by stuffing city hall with political favors for his friends in the developer’s company. And the city official was filling his own pockets with bribes from the developer as well.
At first, the city official didn’t realize that he was legally breaking the law. But when the public began wondering why he was getting richer and richer, he didn’t know how to cover it up, so he called a friend in the Attorney General’s office. The AG’s office is notoriously corrupt, though, and that office immediately knew how to get rich quick, so they agreed to give the city official a percentage of the corruption proceeds.
So, it was a perfect conspiracy: the city official was paying off his friend in the corruption office with dollars for the housing project, and the corruption office got a percentage of the
* With the Burn tool, you can select an area of your image, or a certain color, and bring it to white; this can be useful for cleaning up dirt and dust around an object in an image.
* Sometimes it can be more effective to use the Eraser tool instead of the Burn tool. You can use this tool to get rid of imperfections or unwanted material, like red-eye on photographs.
* The Chalk tool lets you use a chisel-like tool with a soft tip in order to add or remove specific layers of color.
* The Smudge tool allows you to add or delete color by lightening or darkening areas of your image. This tool is often used to soften or smooth images.
* Fades and Grain Effects help you add or remove detail in your images.
* The Eraser tool allows you to erase pixels from an image.
* The Dodge tool allows you to lighten or darken areas of an image.
* The Sponge tool is similar to the Dodge tool, but it’s used to remove color from an image. When you drag the tool across the image, you see a visual preview of how the effect will look.
* The Sharpener tool allows you to make an image look sharper and clearer by increasing the contrast.
* The Sharpen tool works in a similar way to the Sharpener tool, but it’s used to increase the clarity and sharpness of an image.
* The Gradient tool lets you create a type of blend where one color (gradient) fades to the other color (gradient). You can use this to create special effects in images.
* The Gradient Extract tool lets you grab or copy gradients from an image and place them in an outside drawing area. It’s often used to combine several different-colored gradients into one large gradient.
* The Smudge tool, like the Eraser tool, is used to lighten or darken areas in an image. However, the Smudge tool is more like a pencil tool, and you can create clean, even edges.
